In 1981, Port Authority totally rebuilt a few of the 1700 cars from the ground up.

These are the 4000 series, which ran until September 4, 1999. when the PCC ceased operation in Pittsburgh.

I have compiled a list of what 17XX cars became 40XX cars.

 

4000 was 1702 - 4001 was 1720 - 4002 was 1740 - 4003 was 1731 - 4004 was 1739

4005 was 1719 - 4006 was 1767 - 4007 was 1729 - 4008 was 1709 - 4009 was 1700

4010 was 1757 - 4011 was 1733 - 4012 was 4000 - 4013 was 1762

First we have the earlier paint scheme that was used for a short time, either red/white/black, or yellow/white/black.
